1876 Match Result: Oxford Greyhounds 5-33 UBRFC Maroons

The Maroons picked up where they left off in their first fixture of 2023 on Saturday, with a resounding 5-33 win against the Oxford Greyhounds.

This was a match fought between two university sides with rich histories, and there was no better way to honour the past of UBRFC than with the performance from the 30-strong squad that travelled to Oxford.

The Greyhounds took the first score of the match very early on after a couple of penalties conceded by the Maroons gave them attacking field position. 5-0 to the hosts.

The Maroons fronted up after the quick start from Oxford and spent the large majority of the half in their opponents' 22, edging forward with a combination of great play and penalties.

The score was evened by Jamie Treasure cutting a beautiful line in the opposition 22 to register the Maroons first score, and after the extras from Charlie Beckett it was 5-7.

The Maroons' forwards were not going to be outdone in the first half, however, as Lucas North controlled the ball off of a driving maul to dot down for the final try of the half. Charlie Beckett slotted the kick and it was 5-14 Maroons with 40 to go.

The Maroons came out of the blocks strong after half-time with more great play from the forward pack, Gabriel Mann this time making the break through the Oxford line, and captain Sam Hill-Cousins drove the ball over the line off of a pick-and-go. Henry Bedson then kicked the conversion to make it 5-21.

Not to be outdone, the back line pulled off a well worked move to put Henry Bedson over in the corner, and although the conversion was missed, the scoreboard read a story of Bristolian dominance, 5-26.

A final try was added by Wilfred Kemsley dotting the ball down after some great forward play once again, and Henry Bedson added the extras to make the score at full-time 5-33 to the UBRFC Maroons.

The boys will take this excellent performance in their stride as they look to finish this season strong, their next match coming up at Coombe Dingle versus Exeter 3's on the 25th of January.
