h1ELVs

For the last few years, under instruction from the IRB, a set of proposed rule changes has been suggested and trialled in lower tier competitions, most notably at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. As the observant rugby fans will have realised a number of these have been trailled in the super 14 tournament with limited success. However, in order to try and get a better idea of how these willl affect the game, the IRB voted last thursday to introduce 13 of the proposed rules into all levels of competion on a global scale for a year. This means that come the start of our season in september several new rules will have to be understood and used by the 1000s of people who play rugby at the grass roots level in this country.

I have found the list of ELVs to be trialled and suggest everyone has a look at how these changes will affect both the game as a whole but also how it may force them to alter the way they play. I have also included the others that are not being trialled at all levels and not at all!!

ELVs to be trialled worldwide

Assistant Referees

Assistant Referees can assist referees in any manner required when appointed by a match organiser

Posts and flags around the field

The corner posts are no longer considered to be in touch in-goal except when a ball is grounded against the post

Lineout and throw

If a team puts the ball back into their own 22 and the ball is subsequently kicked directly into touch there is no gain of ground

A quick throw may be thrown in straight or towards the throwing team's own goal line

There is no restriction on the number of players who can participate in the lineout from either side (minimum of two)

The receiver in a lineout must stand 2 metres back from the lineout

The player who is in opposition to the player throwing in the ball may stand in the area between the 5 metre line and touch line but must be 2 metres away from the lineout

Lineout players may pre-grip a jumper before the ball is thrown in

The lifting of lineout jumpers is permitted

Maul

Players are able to defend a maul by pulling it down

Remove reference in Law to heads and shoulders not to be lower than hips

Scrum

Introduction of an offside line five metres behind the hindmost feet of the scrum

Scrum half offside lines (must be in close proximity to the scrum as present Law or must retreat five metres)

ELVs to be trialled in an elite Northern Hemisphere competition

Sanctions

For all offences other than offside, not entering through the gate, and Law 10 - Foul Play, the sanction is a Free Kick

Tackle and ruck

If the ball is unplayable at the breakdown, the side that did not take the ball into contact will receive a Free Kick

Maul

If a maul becomes unplayable, the team not in possession at the start of the maul receives a Free Kick

ELVs to be referred back to LPG for further analysis and possible experimentation

Lineout and throw

Incorrect throw (not straight) the sanction is a Free Kick

Tackle and ruck

Offside line occurs immediately at the tackle

Players who are on their feet can play the ball with their hands

There are two Penalty Kicks warded at the tackle and ruck - offside and foul play

Reference to unfair play added to Law 15 (tackle: ball carrier brought to ground)

Offside

Players are only put onside after a tackle when they retreat past the tackle or the ball has moved five metres away from the tackle Kick-off and restart kicks

Incorrect kick-offs and restart kicks result in a Free Kick for the opposition

h1Varsity

WE WON!!!!

Another great win for our boys who performed with real style in front of another big crowd in the memorial stadium. Although UWE had the majority of the ball in the early minutes it wasn't long before we were able to start to build some pressure of our own resulting in a five try victory to ensure the cup remains with its rightful owners for another year!!

Im gonna try and get hold of some photos to put up here asap so keep an eye out!!!

Tom

h1End of Season

So thats BUSA done for another year!!! The 1sts lost on wednesday in their first playoff game to Leeds Met in a very close contest. They eventually lost 35-27 after a late try from the leeds flyhalf finished the game off!! ALthough we probably had the better team on they day we were unable to utilise a string wind to their benefit in the first half and didnt build enough of a lead. However, we did score two tries in the second half, even if it wasnt quite enough!!

The 2s and 3s also had a bad end to the season both losing their final fixtures to UWIC and Cardiff respectively!! The freshers remain very much in the fight and the top of their table with just the playoffs to come in a couple of weeks!! I will put up a copy of the latest table up under the club stuff section!!!

Finally an update of future events: Vasity is still on for the 30th at the Mem, the club AGM will be this wednesday at coombe dingle at a time to be confirmed so if you want a say in the appointment of next years committee you had better be there!!! finally the end of the season dinner is a week on monday and if you havent yet paid for your tickets make sure you get on to it!!

h1Spring Update

Hi everyone...apologies for the lack of news in recent weeks but unfortunately that is how it goes!!!

Few things to deal with - firstly results: The 1sts unfortunately have lost both their fixtures this term narrowly to both St Marys (13-6) and to Cardiff (16-10). The 2nds had a great start to this term with a well fought win over Exeter but couldnt continue this and have lost to both Hartpury and UWIC more recently. With only one game left to play this means that they will probably be relegated for next season. The 3rds luck has been even worse. They lost badly to top placed UWIC first up, even if they did manage to restrict their scoring chances slightly but then lost badly to Plymouth the next week and forfeiting the match to UWIC the next week. Finally they lost to Cardiff 2s in a hard fought game at the dingle. Along with the 2nds they are left to be relegated at the end of the season!! There is some light at the end of the tunnel though as the freshers find themselves top of the freshers league after having lost only twice all season and last weekend turning hartpury over at theirs with a fantastic 10-10 draw!!! so big congratulations to all those fresh esp as they have been able to lift the spirits if the whole club!!!

And now on to more enjoyable topics...social had again been fantastic this term with club moral really high considering the results we have been getting (fresh excluded) so thats brilliant, especially the last two weeks where, the club has been seen, quite literallly, in its full glory!!! its no wonder all the other clubs in the university aspire to be UBRFC...a point highlighted most by the football boys who have started to wear ties to social this year...

Couple of notices for future dates...It is my belief that the VARSITY match is now definetely conmfirmed for the 30th April so keep that date free for what is the biggest amatuer sporting event in the southwest and a good chance to mstick one up to UWE!!!! The club agm will also be soon but date and time are yet to be confirmed!!!!

h1Exeter Away

The Men's Rugby 1's fixture against Exeter has been moved to the superb new Sandy Park stadium (home of the Exeter Chiefs) and we are giving you the chance to be there!!!

Wednesday 28th November will see Bristol Men's Rugby 1's taking on the might of Exeter in the superb new Sandy Park stadium.

The first stage of the main stadium contract was completed last September. This included the impressive new playing pitch and the first main grandstand with seating for 2400. This new development will provide a stunning back-drop to what promises to be a very entertaining evening of rugby.

The match kicks-off at 7.30pm with a fantastic atmosphere expected. If you want to be there the AU will be providing coaches leaving the front of the Students Union at 5pm.

Last year we lost by 1 point after 11 (yes, ELEVEN!) minutes of stoppage time, so we really wanna beat them this year and your support will be welcome!

Tickets are just £4 (includes travel and gate) and can be bought from The AU Office (3rd floor of the Students Union), the UBU shop in the Union or on the coaches while seats last!!!

Money raised will be going to charity. The charity that has been chosen is the Matt Hampson trust.

Matt Hampson was a young Tigers (Leicester) prop forward who suffered a serious neck injury whilst at England U-21 training in March 2005. Matt returned home in early August, after spending 17 months recovering from his injuries at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He is currently paralysed from the neck down and is still unable to breath unaided.  Despite the nature of his injuries, Matt continues to show great courage in the face of adversity. He is constantly looking to raise the profile of other paralysis victims and is determined to become heavily involved in publicising research into spinal injuries

I hope to see as many of you there as possible!!!

h1Latest News

Hi Everyone,

We are now a month into the season and thought id just post to keep you up to date with results: Unfortunately it hasn't been the best start to a season the club has ever enjoyed with both the 2nd and 3rd teams struggling in their newly promoted status. However, those elusive wins should not be far off!!! The 1sts have not fared much better and although won away at bath a couple of weeks ago, went down heavily to a good hartpury side and then on wednesday to St Marys'. The freshers started well after winning at home to hartpury and hope to continue this form through the rest of the season.

Keep up the good work boys, Hope to see many of you in the gym and at social!!

Ed

Im in the process of putting up some of the videos and pictures from first social up so keep a look out in the members section...

h1

In a deal better than that offered by orange wednesdays, instead of offering just 2 for 1, this wednesday UBRFC is proud to be able to present 3 for 1 on all BUSA matches.

This Wednesday all three teams will be playing at home so we need to get as many people as possible down to the dingle to watch the boys!!!

On top of this positive feast of rugby you can also purchase the world renowned dingle-burger, and after the match come and join in for a few beers with the boys!!!

This is a big call out to all those freshers that are hanging around with nothing to do on a wednesday afternoon  between lectures and social!!

h1

Welcome to UBRFC 2007/2008

Hi Everyone!! New Year just started and looking forward to some fantastic rugby throughout the club!! Started of the year in fantastic fashion!! Firstly with a tour to France in which the team won well to a Paris Combined University team and a team from Nantes, but, lost to a very strong Bordeaux team!! (I am hoping to get some pictures up at the first opportunity so keep an eye on this space) Then with the firsts winning pre-season against Worcester!! Looks to be a lot of fresh this year s lets hope they keep up the winning ways with their first games at a tournament this coming Sunday.

In other news, UBRFC has entered a team into the Bristol combined clubs Merit League which takes place on Saturday afternoons. The Medics team will be fulfilling this commitment to begin with, but, hopefully we will get some university players involved as well as they become unavailable!! Played their first game on Saturday against a very good North Bristol side and competed very well considering the size of the opposition, in going down 20-12.

Just a note in terms of site management this year. I have taken over management of the site from Niall who has done a great job in the last year and am looking to keep the site up to date with match reports and player profiles, so to all those first team players ans committee members out there I need some imformation!! Plus any good pictures from past and future socials for the members page!!

Look Forward to seeing everyone at the first social of the year!!!

Tom

h129.1.07 - Next years Committee

Fresh,

On 23rd March there's a day and night for play organised by the rfu. It'll be at RAF yeovilton and will all be paid for by the rfu. It's designed to be fun whilst help this years committee hand over to next years, apart from simply holding a bucket in front of them whilst they strawpedo a bottle of cheap wine. It promises to be plenty of fun. Apparently we'll be climbing trees and stuff like they did on some rugby video a few years ago, possibly living with the lions (Fiori's favorite).
This is for anybody interested in being involved in running the club next year, get back to me asap, I know Alex Smart is keen and is really good at climbing trees.

George

h12.1.07 - New Years news from George

Firstly guys, happy new year. I hope you're all feeling fresh after some hard christmas training. Sunday the 14th is our first day back, there's a club session down at dingle starting at 11.30. Everbody is expected to be there, we're
putting on food and we'll have some high quality coaching. There'll be freshers training the next monday as usual.
Wednesday 17th sees the 1sts playing at home for the 1st time since sliced bread. It's northumbria in a freindly but should be a good game to get back to business.

Lots of love

George

h127.12.06 - Message from Bob about the old boys game

For early info, there are plans for a big old boys game- Alumni v UBRFC- on the same weekend of the varsity boat race- April 28. The plan will be to have a late afternoon kickoff (summer time light), so people can see some of the rowing, including the main mens 8's race in the harbour. A suggested time is 4pm. There will be a dinner. This could be at C Dingle at, say 7pm, so as to keep everyone out there after the game, and I hope it would also be supported by the UBRFC team on the day + other key people. We should be able to fill the clubhouse (up to 70/80). The intention also is to invite those involved with Harry Jeavons-Fellows and to have a second 'opening' of Harry's bar and the Harry J-F memorial stuff on the wall.

Thanks,
Bob

h17.12.06 - Results

Hartpury 32 - 1ST XV 8

2nd XV 38 - Bath 2's 21

3rd XV match cancelled

h1Todays matches

Todays matches see the 1st XV travel to league leaders Hartpury College for another evening kickoff, while the 2nd XV take on Bath 2nds  in Bath a week after the 1st XV got the better of Bath. The 3rd XV and Freshers should also be in action today, the 3rds playing UW Lampeter.

h129.11.06 - Todays results

Both the firsts and seconds secured well deserved wins today. The firsts beating Bath in a match where Bristol should have won a lot earlier than the last kick of the game where returning captain Gareth Williams-Davis slotted the winning dropgoal, win 18-16. The seconds beat Exeter thirds 25-12 at Coombe Dingle.

Match reports have not yet been forthcoming so do not as yet appear on the site. Captains please forward these on.

h128.11.06 - Upcoming games

Ok lads, this wednesday all three teams are playing, 1sts away to Bath, 2nds home to Exeter, 3rds away to Cardiff Medics 2nds and rumour has it that the freshers are playing this weekend as well. So good luck to everyone, lets get anyone not playing to support the teams playing at home. Also would like to remind you all that many a 3rd year would like Wednesday night to monumental, so everyone turn up Roo Bar 7.30 sharp dressed properly.
